It was October of 1969.  The Mets were playing in the world series and the Dizzy Gillespie quintet was playing  a tour of Japan.  The quintet at that time consisted of James Moody on saxophone and flute, Jimmie Merritt on bass, Candy Finch on drums, Mike Longo on piano and of course Dizzy.
